Diamond wire sawing basics
What is a diamond wire saw?
A diamond wire saw cuts by moving a diamond-coated wire through a material with controlled tension, speed, feed, and coolant. It is often selected when the part is brittle, expensive, thick, or difficult to cut cleanly with a blade.
In a diamond wire saw, diamond abrasive does the cutting work while the wire carries the abrasive through the kerf. Depending on the machine design, the wire may be supplied from a spool or formed as an endless loop running over guide wheels. The process creates a narrow cutting path and can reduce mechanical stress compared with many rigid blade methods.
How the process works
- Wire motion: the machine drives the wire at a controlled linear speed.
- Feed control: the workpiece or wire frame advances gradually to avoid overload.
- Cooling and flushing: water or cutting fluid removes heat and debris from the kerf.
- Tension stability: stable tension helps control cut quality and wire life.
